Context
The coach of the team in this video told us they had been struggling to deal with the long ball over their defence. In the lead up to this game, we focussed on how they can use a clear defensive vocabulary to coordinate their defensive movements (See 'Defensive Vocabulary for Coordinated Movements Part 1' - in Tactical>Defending). Particular focus was given to the shout of 'drop', so Coach could assess their decision making and response to triggers. Then we took the players into a game related attack v defence phase of play so we could test out their new vocabulary and see how the defence and midfield worked together. (See 'Defensive Vocabulary for Coordinated Movements Part 2' in Tactical>Defending)
The session ended with this small-sided game themed around defending the long ball. By the end of the session it was great to see how much more the boys were using clear communication and working together as a defensive unit.

Coaching Points
* Defenders need to communicate promptly, succinctly & clearly on the pitch - particularly with the shout of 'Drop!' to counter the long ball. (Keep moving 'Up' where possible too to pressure opponents)
* Triggers to 'Drop' can include a player looking at the space behind your defence, approaching the ball
quickly, using a large backlift & forward runs by attackers.
* Monitor the awareness, anticipation & decision making of defenders as they learn to interpret triggers and stimuli on the pitch.
* Players should be ready for defensive transition - even in possession!
* Defence need to make synchronised and coordinated movements, ensuring they maintain a consistent, often compact shape whilst moving.
* If playing offside, the line needs to work together to make it clear & decisive.
* Defenders should avoid a square to the ball body position & need to prioritise getting to the long ball first.
* The goalkeeper needs to respond to the defence's movements and be ready to act as cover.
* Midfielders should move in coordination with the defence, closing gaps & staying compact.
* Midfielders & forwards should try to put pressure on the ball player - this can prevent accurate long balls.
