Finishing 1v1s after passing combination - Part 2 (Opposed)
technical08:041,470 views

This finishing practice comes in 4 parts. Part 2 sees groups of 5 players completing a passing combination before their attacker is played through on goal to try and beat the goalkeeper. Players can only score in one of the bottom corners of the goal and it gets competitive as teams compete for the most goals! To help players to spot visual triggers when deciding where to aim their shot, the keepers have to prioritise protecting one of the bottom corners.

Context

The coach of this junior side said they regularly get into 1v1 situations in games but the players struggle to finish. Part of this was down to speed of their decision making and part of it was down to their finishing technique.

In Part 1 we gave the players plenty of unopposed opportunities to warm up their finishing in the bottom corners. In Part 2 we make it opposed by adding a goalkeeper. Part 3 then involves an alternative passing combination which leads to players having to finish from a tighter angle. A recovering defender is then added.

Part 4 is game related, and allows plenty of 1v1 finishing opportunities within a small-sided game.

Coaching Points

* Aim for bottom corners of the goal.

* Time run in behind to meet movement of ball without having to disrupt your movement.

* Use movement (spinning in) to draw defender away and make space to move into.

* Choose a corner by reacting to the positioning and movements of the goalkeeper.

* Improve awareness & quick decision making through regular scanning.

* Try not to take too many touches or delay too long when through on goal.

* Choose the part of the foot you use based on what is needed: Inside (accuracy); laces (power); toe (surprise); outside (swerve).

* Disguise your intentions through body & head movements.

* Use both feet regularly - we want both to be strong!

* Open body when you want to play across the goal with curl.

* Good weight on through-balls & brave first touch into space.
