FREE - The Defensive Unit: Prevent Turning, Close Gaps, Cover & Support
small-sided games09:164,100 views

This session focuses on how a defensive unit of 4 defenders or 4 midfielders can work individually and then as a unit to prevent an opponent turning and/or finding gaps between them. It also covers what the 4 should do if their line is broken by a through ball. Chapters include: Closing down warm up; Cover & Support; Preventing turning & through balls.

Context

Whilst the title of this video might suggest we are working with a back 4, we actually put it on to develop the defensive understanding of some of our wide players and central midfielders.

After the exercises in this video we moved onto a 5v5 game without the contrived kick offs. We then progressed to a full pitch, attack vs defence, with two banks of 4 looking to implement the defensive lessons learnt in this video.

Coaching Points

* Close down the attacker quickly (anticipate passes to them) & get 'touch tight' to prevent them turning.

* Use arms to sense & block the attacker's movements.

* After the attacker lays the ball off, drop back quickly in anticipation of a run in behind.

(This can actually deter the attacker from making a run.)

* Close gaps between defenders to prevent through-balls. (Compact!)

* Don't get square to the player pressurising the ball: drop back to provide cover & support.

* If an attacker turns and has space, some of the defensive line may drop to limit space in behind.

* Defenders need to decide when to prioritize marking their opponent & when to mark space.

* If a pass breaks the defensive line, recover quickly as a unit to limit space in front of your goal & make the attackers have to work for their chances.

* Encourage your players to communicate with each other throughout. (see 'The Defence's Verbal Communication' video)
